They are located on the ground floor of the Faculty of Geology of the University of Cagliari, in the Department of Earth Sciences and share an exhibition area of 200 square meters.
The collections consist of thousands of mineralogical, geological and paleontological finds from not only Sardinia, but also from other parts of the Earth. Most of these are present in the cabinets located in the corridors of the Department of Earth Sciences, while numerous others are kept in the drawers, waiting to be transferred to suitable windows.
The material preserved is mainly Sardinian.
In the geological and paleontological collection “Domenico Lovisato”, fossils are of particular interest, which cover a period of time from the Lower Cambrian to the Quaternary. The rare archaeocyatins and trilobites are from the Sardinian Cambrian. Noteworthy are the Silurian graptolites and the rich collection of Cenozoic echinids and pettinids.
The “Leonardo De Prunner” collection includes minerals such as silver and silver native to Sarrabus, Cerussites, Anglesites and Phosgenites, from Montevecchio, Monteponi and Villaputzu. The Museum houses a collection of Sardinian rocks by Alberto Della Marmora and the beautiful atlases that accompany the work “Voyage en Sardaigne”, also by Della Marmora.
Also of great interest is the collection of diamonds and platinum nuggets donated in 1866 by G. Mendel.
Both museums can trace their origins back to the early 19th century, when the Viceroy of Sardinia Carlo Felice of Savoy donated his collections to the Royal University. Over the last two centuries, the collections were subject to various subdivisions and mergers and their heritage was greatly enriched thanks to the research of various scholars, until it reached its current high scientific and cultural value.
