Berchidda, Monte Acuto Dolmen

Berchidda, Monte Acuto Dolmen

Berchidda, Monte Acuto Dolmen

The monument is located on a plateau on the slopes of Monte Acuto, near the ruins of the homonymous castle and in the homonymous region, in northern Sardinia.
It is one of the largest dolmens in the area. Oriented to SW, it was built using a granite outcrop.
The burial, with a rectangular plan (width 1.30/1.50 m; depth 3.50-4.00 m; height 1.00-1.50 m), is laterally delimited by two orthostats with well-worked internal faces, while at the bottom it is closed by a wall made of large stones.
The structure is covered by a polygonal plate broken into two parts (length about 4.00 m; width about 2.80 m) and shows a hemispherical cup on the plate, while another eight cups are present on one of the fragments of the roof.
The circular area in front of the monument, at the cliff, is delimited by a wall and by rocky outcrops. On the d side of the entrance, near the remains of a wall structure, an inverted aniconic menhir can be identified.
The monument dates back to the Late Neolithic - Eneolithic. The site was visited during the Bronze Age and in the medieval period.

History of excavations
The dolmen was excavated in 1994 by Paola Basoli.
