The “Emilio and Joyce Lussu” Historical Museum is part of the Armungia Museum System, with the Ethnographic Museum “Sa Domu de is Ainas”, the Blacksmith's Shop and the Nuraghe Armungia. It is set up in the spaces of the Secretary's House, an important 19th century manor complex located near the Church of the Immaculate Conception and which belonged to the Dessì family. Evidence of the historical and architectural importance of the building is the private chapel, preserved behind the main buildings, transformed into a room for educational activities and conferences after recovery.
A place of remembrance and exhibition, the museum traces the story of Emilio Lussu, politician and writer from Armungo, and of Joyce Lussu Salvadori, writer, partisan and life partner. The exhibition itinerary consists of images, works, documents, films and autobiographical testimonies. The main section is dedicated to the biography of Emilio Lussu: from his origins in Armungia to the political commitment of the second twentieth century, passing through the Great War with the “Sassari” Brigade, the founding of the Sardinian Action Party, the anti-fascist struggle and exile. The experience of the First World War is then, in particular, recalled through the story of “A Year on the Plateau” in the “Emilio Lussu and the Great War” section.
Along the way, various multimedia environments allow the viewing of photographs, in-depth texts, digitized historical documents, film reconstructions and interviews. Some interactive lecterns are also dedicated to deepening the contents and editorial history of works such as 'March on Rome and Entry', 'The Devil's Boar', 'Fronts and Frontiers', 'The Olive Grove and the Graft' and others. Evidence of Emilio Lussu's connection with Armungia and his places are the shots taken in 1971 by the artist and photographer Franco Caruso. Finally, the photographic exhibition “The Journey of a Woman in the History of the Twentieth Century” is dedicated to Joyce Lussu and her political and cultural commitment.
Why it is important to visit it
The exhibition allows you to retrace the biographies of two important figures in the history of the Italian and European twentieth century: Emilio Lussu, legendary fighter of the Great War, political leader and writer, and Joyce Salvadori, partisan, writer and life partner.
