Alghero, Casa Gioiosa - Museum of Prison Memory

Casa Gioiosa, the former agricultural penal colony of Tramariglio, houses the headquarters of the Porto Conte Regional Natural Park, the CEAS Porto Conte and the Capo Caccia Marine Protected Area - Isola Piana. Inside, there is also the large “green classroom” of the botanic garden and some of the Museum and Multimedia Areas most appreciated by visitors: the Museum of Prison Memory “G. Tomasiello”, the Little Prince Park, the permanent exhibition of the works of Master Elio Pulli inspired by the work “Su Printzipeddu Nostru” by Luciano Goddi, the Téléia Immersive Multimedia Center, the educational workshops “Life of Bees” and “Mines and Minerals”.
The Museum of Prison Memory of the former agricultural penal colony of Tramariglio is set up inside the old cells of the penitentiary institution, now the prestigious headquarters of the Porto Conte Park and the Capo Caccia Marine Protected Area — Isola Piana. Two floors rich in history and stories, which tell the daily life of the time through photo galleries and objects with an important evocative function (clothes, work tools, etc.). The complex is organized and structured like a modern and avant-garde museum capable of fulfilling a dual purpose: on the one hand, to raise awareness and reflect on the drama of detention and on the concept of social rehabilitation; on the other, to stimulate the memory of the experience lived in accordance with the ancient Latin motto luendo docere, or “teaching while having fun”. At the end of the exhibition itinerary, in fact, young visitors can pose to emulate the moment of “mug shots” or attempt an adventurous and acrobatic escape to freedom, avoiding touching the infrared rays and thus setting off the alarm.
