  • Tuesday, January 16 - Su Fogadoni (Sant'Antonio Abate)
  • Saturday, January 20 - San Sebastiano

Mandas - square in front of the Church of Sant'Antonio Abate, reservations are recommended for activities surrounding the rite of “Su Fogadoni”

About Fogadoni - Ancestral tradition. A unique experience of faith and folklore amidst extraordinary moments of fun and mystical ritual superstition. Preamble to the carnival, a pagan legacy of purification and regeneration of ancient rural communities, linked to the renewal of nature, solstitial cycles and above all to the cult of the sun god, of which bonfires are an allegory because of the light and heat they emanate. Certainly a tradition spread by the figure of Saint Anthony the Abbot (a hermit in the desert, born in Egypt around 250 and a Christian pilgrim in the lands overlooking the Mediterranean Sea).

Saint Anthony the Abbot is celebrated on Tuesday, January 16. This is the most intimate day, for those who can take a day off midweek to follow and learn every detail of the tradition. In the morning and in the early afternoon, the Museums of Mandas can be visited, waiting for the start of the religious procession at 17:00, which will proceed from the streets of the historic center, to the Medieval Compendium of Saint Anthony the Abbot, which houses the homonymous church, located in the stone courtyard, a few meters from the huge pile of wood and the rooms destined for the Ethnographic Museum “Is Lollas de is Aiaius”.
Subsequently, the parish priest will bless the bonfire, before the lighting of “Su Fogadoni” scheduled for 18:00 and the start of dances and music, which will continue throughout the night.

San Sebastiano is celebrated on Saturday, January 20, for this date the Mandas Museums will all be open in the morning and afternoon from 5:30 p.m., while along the historic center of the town, you can follow the traditional religious procession in honor of San Sebastiano, which will end in the Church of San Giacomo Maggiore (Santu Jacu), for the solemn mass. A few steps away, another bonfire will be set up, in the square on which there is also the entrance to the “Peregrinatio Fideli” Museum of Sacred Art and the entire nineteenth-century convent area of Saint Francis. Here, from 18:30 to 20:00, inside the former church dedicated to the friar of Assisi, there will be a concert by Beppe Dettori (singer of Tazenda) and Raoul Moretti (just back from the tour with the singer Elisa).
In an intimate and complicit atmosphere, one of the most representative Sardinian voices in an acoustic guitar and harp concert. A musical universe in which to combine the archaic world and the modern world to tell the contemporary, a few steps from the big bonfire, which will be lit from about 19:00, after the blessing of the parish priest.
Also on January 20, throughout the evening and until late at night, music and dancing will begin with tasting of typical products. From 15:30 to 18:30 the other two museums (about 400 meters away from the bonfire square) can also be visited, and you can book a guided tour of the entire historic center (beginning at 16:30) to the Ancient Train Station of the Green Train. For those who want to take advantage of Mandarin food and wine, both for lunch and dinner, the Mandas refreshment points will be available, with restaurant and farmhouse (about 40 meters walk from the party area). Many multifaceted experiences, in a continuous and unmissable suggestion.
